Submission Genres
Feature Articles
We welcome submissions for this section around the main theme for each
journal issue, which will be announced in advance. Submissions for this
section may be theoretical pieces or reports of findings from ongoing
empirical research and should be between 5,000-8,000 words in length. We welcome articles from a range of perspectives and
from people who occupy various positions. Contributors include educational researchers, graduate
students, practitioners, and policymakers from
different disciplines. All formats of inquiry are invited, including video,
audio, or photographic presentations.
Notes from the Field
This section will include writing from work in progress that represents
a range of methodologies and may be either theoretical or empirical.
We imagine this section as a space
for sharing vignettes from unfinished studies to promote conversation about
the research. We welcome submissions of varied length and style.
Commentaries
Commentaries are opinion pieces about current issues or specific policies
and programs that focus on urban schools, students or teachers. Commentaries
might also respond to research articles published here or in other electronic
journals. Commentaries should be grounded in research, theory or practice.
We encourage the submission of commentaries that are of varied length
and style, but typically articles in this section are between 1500-2000 words.
Reviews
We welcome reviews of books, websites, or documentaries that address
issues in urban education. The reviewer should describe the content of
the book, site, or documentary and then assess its contribution to scholarship,
research or practice. Ideas for reviews will be proposed by editors but
may also be initiated by readers. Submissions for this section should be between 500-1000 words. Please email the editors with ideas
for reviews prior to writing so that we can avoid duplicate submissions.
Youth Voices
This section highlights the voices of urban youth and includes reflective writing, expressive art, and multimedia submissions that focus on the issue theme. We welcome submissions of varied length and style.
Submission Guidelines
Please fill out the submission form completely and e-mail your submission to journal@gse.upenn.edu. This document contains all of our submission and formatting guidelines, as well as a form that must be completed in order for submissions to be accepted.
